Why "The Commons"?

"Ruins is the destination toward which all men rush, each pursuing his own best interest in a society that believes in the freedom of the commons." — Garrett Hardin, 1968

In 1968, ecologist Garrett Hardin described the "Tragedy of the Commons": the risk that shared resources can be depleted when individuals act only in their own interest. But the commons is more than just a cautionary tale—it's our shared environment, our gathering places, and the resources we all depend on. These spaces are woven into our communities, enjoyed by all, and require collective responsibility to steward and sustain.
